Passing from Death to Life

In this age of modern medical advances, it seems to me, that we all start to expect miracles.   What I mean is everyone expects that whatever our ailments might be and no matter how dire our physical circumstances might be somehow the medical community will have a trick up the sleeve to heal us, to save us.    And when that doesn’t happen, we get a painful dose of reality.   We are reminded that when it comes down to it, only God really does miracles.  Left to human intelligence and skill we can only get so far.

Our Bible chapters remind us of the truth that we are all in the same boat.  There is one thing certain.  Life leads to death.  Dry bones in a valley, a body four days dead in the tomb,  a cross on a hill – all are reminders of this truth.   We are helpless to prevent it, just as Mary and Martha could not prevent their beloved brother from succumbing to his illness.

But then God steps into the scene.   The one who created life in the first place declares that death is not necessarily the end.  In fact, death is not only the enemy of life but it is an enemy that God knows full well how to defeat.   And in the end it provides him a way to show his glory.   John 11:14-15 & 40.

You see, God really does miracles.  Where there is death he brings life.  This passage from death to life is a constant theme in the Bible, and life always and only comes from God.   Those who are in an authentic relationship with him can count on him for life.   In truth, those that live in and believe in Jesus as their Lord and savior have already passed over into this life, and the physical death that we have in common with all people takes on little significance at all.   ( John 15:25-26,  John 5:19-24, 1 John 5:12)

With all the efforts, time and money that have been put into finding ways to prolong life we can easily lose sight of the what is really important.   Our true life begins with God and will never end because of our friendship with Jesus.    He is the resurrection and the life.
