Why Discover Practices?

You are invited to join the Peace community this year in Discover Practices – a different way each week that you can engage with Jesus on your own so as to experience his love and goodness.  Typically these will involve 2-3 15-20 minute spiritual activities … some that can be integrated with what you are already regularly doing (like a daily walk or devotional time).  Each week a staff person will also be blogging on that week’s practice and briefly sharing his/her own experiences and inviting you to share your own.

Our list of Discover Practices is inspired by the spiritual temperament writing of Gary Thomas in his book Sacred Pathways.  Thomas states, “What is a “sacred pathway”? Put very simply, it describes the way we relate to God, how we draw near to him. Do we have just one pathway? Not necessarily. Most of us, however, will naturally have a certain predisposition for relating to God, which is our predominant spiritual temperament.” Thomas emphasizes these pathways as different ways that different people love Jesus.  We are going to turn that 180° believing that these can also be ways that people receive Jesus’ love.  It is through such experiences and practices of being out in nature, or engaging in Bible study, or being supported through relationships with others, or being inspired by music and the arts, or setting aside time and space for quiet meditation and prayer that Christ offers people with different temperaments a fresh experience of his love and truth.  It is our hope that through Discover practices, you will:

  • Sense Christ’s presence

  • Engage with God’s story of love in Jesus more deeply

  • See and receive Jesus’ goodness

  • Experience affirmation as God’s child
