The S.O.A.P.Y. Method for Scripture Reading
S FOR SCRIPTURE - Open your Bible to a chosen reading.
Take time reading and allow the Holy Spirit to work. Read it at least twice. When you are done, look for a verse, sentence, or phrase that particularly spoke to you, and write it down.
O FOR OBSERVATION - What is God saying in this Scripture?
What does it say about God?
What does it say about people?
What does it say about our relationship with God?
How does it point you to the good news of Jesus?
Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and reveal His truth to you. Paraphrase and write this section of Scripture down in your own words.
A FOR APPLICATION - Personalize what you have read, by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now.
How is God speaking to you through these words? Perhaps it is instruction, encouragement, revelation of a promise, or corrections for a particular area of your life. Write out how this scripture can apply to you today.
P FOR PRAYER – Speak to God about what you are learning.
This can be as simple as asking God to help you to do what His Word says, or it may be asking for greater insight into what He is revealing to you. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say!
Y FOR YIELD - Be aware of what you are learning from God’s Word here and seek to yield your will to His, by living according to what He is teaching you.
