Seeing God through the Gospel: What is the Gospel?
How we look at God matters. There are certainly valid lenses that Scripture provides to understand and engage with God ... His creation, his law, his relationship with Israel, etc. But central is the Good News of Jesus: the story of his life, death, and resurrection, and the full range of God’s gifts. As theologian Michael Bird puts it: “The gospel constitutes our window into the inner being, the divine work, and even the eternal plan of God, and therein our attention lies.” This week, we focus on the lens itself as we delve into grasping the Gospel.
Monday | Acts 2:29-41
What did it mean for the people (that Peter is speaking to) that this Jesus of Nazareth was crucified but had risen from the dead? What was their response to Peter’s message? What does Jesus’ death and resurrection mean for you?
Tuesday | Acts 13:16-41
The Gospel – Good News – is the work that God has done. Make a list of all that Paul says God did in this text. What is the difference between King David and King Jesus? What does the Good News of Jesus’ resurrection mean for us?
Wednesday | John 3:13-21
Jesus is having a conversation with a learned teacher, Nicodemus. The Good News focuses on Jesus being “lifted up” on a tree. What does John’s passage teach us about the heart of God? How do light and darkness themes inform the Gospel story? How have you experienced the love of God?
Thursday | Romans 5:6-17
Paul loves to speak about the grace of God and its power over sin in the world. How does God’s love save you and me from our sin? How would you describe your response to what Jesus did for you? How does your life reflect a life of gratitude and service? How might God’s Spirit be moving you in your spiritual journey in this next season?
Friday | Ephesians 2:1-10
What would your life be like without the grace and work of Jesus? Verse 4 says, “but God….” What does life with Jesus look like? How is your life a response to the Gospel power of Jesus?
