Week of December 8, 2024

This week, we follow Joseph, the unlikely earthly father of Jesus (Matthew 1:18-24). He was a good man, intent on doing what was right. He never speaks in the gospel accounts; we only see his intentions and actions. But Joseph is the exclamation point of a family line of unlikely people. Aren’t we all? Aren’t we all unlikely candidates of the call of Christ? Spend time this week exploring the unlikely glory you have received in Jesus.

Monday | Judges 5:11-15

Gideon was hiding, scared, and afraid. Yet God called him a “mighty man of valor” and appointed him to lead Israel’s army. When has God called you to something for which you didn’t feel ready or equipped? How does God’s declaration to Gideon change him- and how can it change you?

Tuesday | Matthew 4:18-21

Jesus flipped the script for rabbis. Instead of disciples coming to him, he went to them. Instead of choosing the most qualified, he chose… fishermen. How do you not “fit the bill” of a model disciple? What glory might this bring to God’s kingdom?

Wednesday | John 15:12-17

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus reinforced to his disciples that he chose them. Jesus is the one with the authority and the power, and he selflessly gives that away to his people. How has time with Jesus encouraged you? When have you experienced the friendship of Jesus? What do we gain from knowing we are Jesus’ friend?

Thursday | 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

God has made a point of choosing what people wouldn’t in order to undermine our natural tendency to see ourselves as the best, most qualified, and smartest. We can give up the pursuit because God has a purpose for us, whoever we are. What is one way you can begin boasting in your weakness and foolishness?

Friday | Psalm 8

God has woven his majesty and glory throughout creation. We can look at the beauty that surrounds us, but we can also look at the symmetry, functionality, and purpose within us to see God’s glory at work. Where do you see God’s glory in creation? What about in your own being? Reflect on that and praise God for his wondrous work.
