Week of May 20, 2024
Through the story of Jehoash God reminds us that when we hold ourselves back from God, we risk missing out on being a part of His wonderful work in the world. On the other hand, there is great reward in being boldly faithful to God’s will. During this season of Pentecost, we reflect on how the Holy Spirit calls and empowers us to be bold and persistent in fighting against evil and in doing good in Jesus’ name.
Monday | 2 Kings 13:10-11 & 14-25
Jehoash/Joash(the same king) was not faithful to God only, but worshipped false God’s as well. Why do you think God would still offer to give him victory against his enemies? What caused Jehoash to hold back from whole-heartedly following God’s instruction? What holds you back from being more zealous and enthusiastic about doing what God calls you to do?
Tuesday | I Timothy 6:11-16; Titus 2:11-14
How would you describe what the “good fight” is about? What are we to be fighting against? What are we to be fighting for? How have you seen God at work in you to fight the good fight? What is the danger of giving up, or pausing in the fight?
Wednesday | Romans 12:9-13; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24
What things does God call us to be zealous for and not stop doing? How might a person “quench the Spirit” in his or her life? In what ways has your zeal or fervor for following God lessened lately? Why? How might you reconnect with God and get fired up in your will to follow?
Thursday | Matthew 17:14-20
How is God speaking to you about your faith in this story and the words of Jesus? Do you believe that God will work through you, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to fight against evil and do good? In what ways do you think God is calling you to step out and act in faith today?
Friday | Galatians 6:1-10
What causes us to grow weary in doing the work of God? In what ways have you stopped short of living boldly as a follower of Jesus? Where can you find motivation and strength to be more bold in living out God’s will?
