Week of October 13, 2024

We’ve divided the seven churches of Revelation into 3 groups:  churches which were called to bear fruit (Ephesus, Sardis, and Laodicea), churches called to stop compromising (Pergamum and Thyatira), and churches that were commended for their faithfulness (Smyrna and Philadelphia). This week, we consider churches that Jesus commended for their faithfulness despite opposition and persecution. The personal question becomes, for what can you find joy in knowing that Jesus is commending you?

Monday | Revelation 2:8-11

Even in churches that he later corrected, Jesus first had words of commendation (except for Laodicea). In general, why is commendation important before we try to correct someone? What specifically did Jesus commend the church in Smyrna for? What does it mean that they despite their poverty are rich? How could those riches have carried them through a time of persecution and suffering?

Tuesday | Revelation 3:7-13

For what did Jesus commend the church in Philadelphia? What does it mean that they had “kept” Jesus’ Word? What was his promise regarding their opponents in the local synagogue?  What might be the doors that Jesus had opened for them?  What doors do you think God is opening now for Peace? For what would Jesus commend you in your life’s journey?

Wednesday | Hebrews 10:32-39

We believe that Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians as encouragement for their faith journey. What specifically were they commended for? (vs. 32-34) What does it mean practically for us to come alongside others in their suffering? Why were they willing to sacrifice the loss of material possessions? (v.34) How does keeping an eternal perspective help to motivate earthly sacrifice?  At what level is your confidence in Jesus these days? What could increase it?

Thursday | 1 Peter 4:12-16

Peter commended an attitude of joy even while suffering. What could bring first-century believers such joy even in the middle of difficult circumstances? What gives you such joy? Have you ever been insulted or mistreated because of your faith? How did you respond? In what ways did you or could you see that as a blessing?

Friday | Matthew 25:14-30

For what were the servants in the parable commended by their master? For what was the last servant condemned by his master? What are the most important principles that guide you in your stewardship of your time, abilities, and finances? For what aspects of your stewardship do you anticipate a heavenly commendation? In what areas could you do better?
