Where are You Heading in 2023?

As we begin a new year, it is worth asking ourselves where or to what are we heading in 2023 in seeking the security and fulfillment that we long for.  This week’s Bible passages lead us to consider the path we’re on and whether we are walking the Jesus’ way.

January 2                            Isaiah 30:1-18

As they faced a threat from the nation of Assyria, representatives of the nation of Judah were on the road to Egypt seeking an alliance.  God pronounces his judgement upon their failure to trust him for their security and protection.  Where do you tend to go in order to find security … money, relationships, government, self-reliance?  What is a path toward greater trust in God?

January 3                            Psalm 119:1-16

A common Hebrew way of picturing a life of faithfulness to God is to walk in his way.  What does the psalm writer point to as some of the key practices if we are to walk with faithful obedience?   How in 2023 can you more consistently “hide” God’s Word in your heart (v.11)?  What does it mean for you to meditate on God’s Word (v.15)?

January 4                            Psalm 119:97-105

The psalm writer loves God’s “torah” … which is most often translated as “law” but has a broader meaning of God’s instruction.  In fact, the first five books of the Old Testament are called the Torah and include not only God’s commands given to Israel but the stories of his saving work.  Which of the stories from Genesis and Exodus are most meaningful for you?  What do they teach you about God?  Which of his commands (starting with the 10 commandments) do you most treasure and seek to obey?

January 5                            John 14:1-7

Jesus states that the ultimate “way” is not just a set of teachings but rather a Person … it’s Jesus himself.  What does it mean to you to have Jesus as your “way”?  What do believe that Jesus will enable you to receive in this life while you’re walking his way?  What does he emphasize as the final destination (hint v.3)?

January 6                            1 John 1:5-7; 2:5-6

What does it mean to “walk” the way of light versus the way of darkness?  At Peace we describe the Jesus’ way in terms of:   believe Jesus, pursue Jesus, live like Jesus, love like Jesus, risk like Jesus.  Picking out one of these, what is a specific step you could take this year to make that quality of Jesus a greater reality in your life?
