Week of July 8, 2024

Monday | Philippians 1:27-28; 3:17-21 (see NLT)

According to Paul, what is the most important thing we should be striving for? What does it mean to walk as an enemy of the cross? How might devotion to our politics turn us away from bearing the cross that Jesus calls us to take up? Paul implies that our most important citizenship is that of heaven? What does this mean for your life?

Tuesday | Matthew 22:15-22

What do think Jesus is implying here, regarding what we owe to the government versus what we owe to God? What would be the appropriate and godly attitude toward paying our taxes? In what ways do you find yourself exhibiting an attitude about government and taxes that would not be God-pleasing?

Wednesday | Romans 13:1-7

How can we be subject to, and honor our governmental leaders while prioritizing full allegiance to God? Paul wrote this when his readers were under Roman rule. How does this speak to us, if we feel that our government is moving in the wrong direction, or the “wrong” political party is in control?

Thursday | Acts 5:27-32

Notice that Peter does not say that they must obey their own conscience, or personal understandings of right and wrong. Instead, they must obey God. How do we make sure our thoughts and attitudes about the government, politics, righteousness and justice, are in obedience to God’s will? When might it be right to disobey the governmental authorities?

Friday |  2 Chronicles 7:13-16

What important steps does God give His people in seeking hope and healing for their nation? How well do you think Christians in America are doing with each of these steps? How well are you doing in showing humility, praying for your country, seeking God and turning away from sin to obedience? Which steps do you need to invest more energy in? Which steps can we work on more together as the church?
