Week of June 24, 2024
This week we watch the “Kinsman Redeemer” at work in the book of Ruth.
Monday | Ruth 4:1-4, Exodus 6:6-7
Explanation of Kinsman Redeemer. Kinsman Redeemer is the nearest male relative who is responsible for coming to the aid of someone in desperate need. Ruth 4:1 introduces us to the man who is Naomi’s closest relative. How does the Exodus passage help us anticipate what a Redeemer can do for Ruth and Naomi? What does the Exodus passage teach us about the redeemer qualities of God?
Tuesday | Ruth 4:1-4, 3:1-3
God is in the details. If you look carefully at this story, you will see God in the details. Note how Ruth “happened” to choose Boaz’s field to glean. Note how the Redeemer “happened” to show up at the gate. What other ways do you see God in the details of this story? How do you see God in the details of your own story? What does that tell you about God’s care for you?
Wednesday | Ruth 4:2-6
God is at work in sacrifices we are willing to make. The city gate is where legal transactions are made. Boaz allows the closest relative to purchase Naomi’s land and thus expand his wealth. Boaz continues to show him that his responsibility would extend to caring for Naomi and marrying Ruth, the Moabite woman. The Redeemer would need to be willing to make some sacrifices. The closest relative says no; Boaz says “I will do it.” What sacrifices does Boaz make? Reflect on the sacrifices you have made for family members. How have you seen God work through these sacrifices?
Thursday | Ruth 4:7-12, Luke 4:16-19, Galatians 4:4-7
The book of Ruth is a summary of Redemption that we find in all of Scripture. Definitions: 1) Redemption is the action of saving or being saved from sin. 2) Redemption is the recovery of something that was lost. What was Boaz recovering for Naomi and Ruth? How is that a picture of what God does for us in Jesus? How is God working in your life to help you recover something that you have lost? (e.g. self-worth, identity, hope, family members, joy, etc.) Ask God to bring redemption to your life.
Friday | Ruth 4:7-12
The Sandal. Note: When he takes off his sandal, he gives Boaz the right to step in his place as the Redeemer. Boaz pays for the land, takes Ruth as his wife, AND declares it before the elders of the community. Boaz takes responsibility. Where is God asking you to take responsibility?
