Fire

On the day of Pentecost, God poured out the presence and energy of the Holy Spirit as evidenced by tongues of fire resting on the believers.  Fire in the Scriptures is evidence of God’s consuming presence, his passion for his people, and his judgment on evil.  The Spirit brings a holy fire into our lives: purging evil and igniting in us a vibrant faith.

May 29           Deuteronomy 4:9-14, 23-24

God speaks through the fire to Moses. Why do think God used fire to speak to Moses? Fire calls us to attention, to take action. God is further described as a consuming fire, a jealous God. What does this mean for us? How does that impact our relationship with God?

May 30           Acts 2:1-4

What would your reaction have been to see tongues of fire, and hear people speak in other languages all at once? The same power that caused fire to appear is within us through the Holy Spirit. Do you recognize the power of the Holy Spirit in your life? Knowing the power of the Holy Spirit, how can we call on Him to make radical change in our world?

May 31            Acts 2:40-47

This community in Acts joined together, sold their possessions, and committed to spreading the Gospel together. How can we apply this mindset each day? What power is there in a believing community? Do you have a Christian community you can depend on? If not, pray about joining a small group, Bible study, or finding a way to connect at Peace.

June 1             1 Thessalonians 1:2-7

We are called to be an example of Jesus in our lives. Are there areas in your life that the Holy Spirit is convicting you to change or turn over to Jesus? What is holding you back from this change? How can your Christian community support you in this change?

June 2            1 Thessalonians 5:16-24

Sanctifying is the process in which we become more like Christ, through following Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. What would sanctification look like in your life? How can you rejoice in the face of suffering? How can you pray without ceasing in a world of distractions? What does giving thanks look like, even when facing difficulties?
