Mountain View
The prophet Isaiah uses mountains frequently in his writing to illustrate spiritual truth, especially the awesome presence and power of God. What have been your experiences with being in the mountains, both life-giving and possibly threatening?
November 28 Isaiah 2:1-5
What do you find most appealing about mountains? What was Isaiah’s expectation regarding the nations? How has this prophecy been fulfilled at least in part through Jesus and the mission work of the church? What is most appealing about the mountain of Jesus … of his death on Mount Calvary?
November 29 Isaiah 14:12-15
Most specifically this Scripture addresses the arrogant king of Babylon and is secondarily a reference to Satan, the Adversary. Earthly and supernatural powers have desired to exalt themselves as if on a mountain ruling over all the earth. What brought about the fall of Satan (see Revelation 12:10-11)? What has led to the fall of so many earthly rulers?
November 30 Isaiah 44:21-23
What were the reasons God gives in verse 21 for Israel and all of God’s creation to give praise? In what ways have you experienced the natural world giving praise to God? What location out in nature have you found to be especially spiritual and joy-giving?
December 1 Isaiah 52:7-10
This Scripture references a messenger who went from a victorious battle to share the good news with a waiting king and people. What has been a “mountaintop” experience for you of sharing good news with others? What is the good news of Jesus that we can share with the world?
December 2 Isaiah 64:1-4
Have you ever experienced an earthquake? What were your emotions? Isaiah uses a mountain earthquake as a picture of the awesome power of God. What is a life experience for you, whether out in nature or in your home, of God’s awesome presence? Take time to share that experience with a friend.
